Abigail Powers Fillmore (1798-1853)
Abigail Fillmore, the wife of the thirteenth president, was born in New York. When she began to teach, one of her students was Millard Fillmore, who was two years younger than she was. The couple married in 1826. After their marriage Abigail continued to teach. It was the first time a president's wife worked outside the home after marriage. She had two children, Millard Powers Fillmore and Mary Abigail Fillmore. She was an avid reader and established the first White House library. This photo was taken after Fillmore's presidency.
