James Fisk (1834-1872)
Born in Vermont, Fisk was a capitalist and speculator. In New York he became partners with Daniel Drew in the "Erie War" and made a fortune. He was unscrupulous, and led a life of prodigality. He bought his way to a post as colonel of the 9th Regiment of the New York militia. He quarreled over his mistress and his business transactions with Edward Stokes, who fatally shot him. This carte de visite shows a whimsical and satirical drawing of Fisk as an angel.
