Elbridge Thomas Gerry (1837-1927)
Elbridge T. Gerry was a lawyer who became counsel of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in 1870. He was instrumental in creating the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in 1874 and was its president in 1879. He campaigned against showmen like Barnum and their use of children in circus entertainment.
