John Gibbs Gilbert (1810-1889)

Gilbert was born in Boston where he made his acting debut in 1828. He first appeared in New York in 1839. Gilbert found that his true forte was in comedy, especially in the role of old men. In 1847 he visited London and performed at the Princess' Theatre. Gilbert became acting manager at Wallack's Theatre in New York. He was the leading actor at Wallack's from 1861 to 1888.
