Josiah Gorgas (1818-1883)
Gorgas was born in Pennsylvania and attended West Point. He went to the Mexican War as a brevet second lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps and played a prominent role in the war. But Gorgas became involved in an insubordinate correspondence with Secretary of State James Buchanan, which left him bitter. When the Civil War began, Captain Gorgas was in charge of Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia. But Gorgas's wife, Amelia Gayle, was from Alabama. When Gorgas was asked to join the Confederacy, he agreed and President Jefferson Davis appointed him major in the artillery. Gorgas was a logistical genius. In 1864 he was promoted to brigadier general.
