Jesse Root Grant (1794-1873)

Jesse Grant was the father of General Ulysses S. Grant. He established himself in Point Pleasant, Ohio, and in 1821 married Hannah Simpson. Ulysses S. Grant was born in a two-roomed cabin and baptized Hiram Ulysses Grant. Jesse Grant was a hardworking farmer who was shrewd and thrifty. Self-taught, he wanted his children to receive an education. From age six to age seventeen Ulysses was sent to school. In 1838 Jesse Grant obtained for his son an appointment to West Point.
