Francis Vinton Greene (1850-1921)
Francis Greene was a soldier, historian, and engineer. He graduated West Point in 1870. In 1872 he was assigned to the Corps of Engineers. He wrote an important work on the Russian army. Greene resigned from the army in 1886 but enlisted in the volunteer army as a colonel in 1898. He was appointed brigadier general in May. He was in charge of the second expedition to the Philippines and later in the year was appointed major general. After the war, Greene became a police commissioner of New York City.
