George Sears Greene (1801-1899)
George Sears Greene graduated from West Point but resigned the army in 1836 to become a civil engineer. In January 1862 he became colonel of the 60th New York and was named brigadier general of volunteers in April. He commanded a brigade at Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. In 1865 Greene was named major general of volunteers.
