William Batchelder Greene (1818-1878)
William Batchelder Greene was a Unitarian minister, banking reformer, soldier, and individualist anarchist. He attended West Point for a time and then withdrew. He graduated Harvard Divinity School in 1845. He began working on banking reforms. In the early 1860s Greene was appointed colonel in the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. An anecdote relates that the Colonel asked Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) to give a speech to his men. At first she refused but he insisted and she gave what was her first public speech. Greene resigned in October 1862. He began to work with labor reform groups.
