Oscar Hammerstein (1847-1919)
Oscar Hammerstein, an inventor, composer, builder, showman and impresario, hoped to revitalize opera in the U.S. He was born in Pommerania, the oldest son of a large Jewish family. Oscar reached New York City in 1864. Hammerstein's first theater was the Harlem Opera House, at 125th Street, opened in 1889. He built a total of eleven theaters, was the moving force behind Times Square, and died almost penniless. His nephew, Oscar Hammerstein II, became more famous because of his musicals. In this photo Hammerstein poses beside his cigar roller.
