Benjamin Henry Grierson (1826-1911)
Benjamin Henry Grierson became a major in the 6th Illinois Cavalry in 1861. In 1863 he led "Grierson's Raid." Riding from Tennessee through Mississippi, Grierson wreaked havoc by breaking up the vital Southern Railroad and cutting the telegraph. In June 1863 he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers and major general of volunteers in May 1965. After the war he was promoted brigadier general and then major general.
