Ships at Dock

In the foreground along Pier 15 on the East River, amidst a forest of masts, is the packet ship Dreadnought. Built in 1853, she made some 75 successful transatlantic crossings. She was later wrecked off Cape Horn in 1869, with all hands rescued after 14 days at sea in the lifeboats. Note the sign on the pier saying "Hands office, 117 Wall Street, for Washington DC, Georgetown and Alexandria Steamship Line, Pier 15."
