Charles Godfrey Gunther (1822-1885)

C. Godfrey Gunther was the son of two German immigrants. He became a firefighter at a young age. Gunther was the mayor of New York City from 1864 to 1865. When he lost his bid for reelection, he turned his attention to hospitals and prisons.
