Henry Wager Halleck (1815-1872)

Before the Civil War, Henry Wager Halleck had a brilliant career as a soldier, teacher, writer and lawyer. In 1861 he accepted a commission as major general in the Union Army. He received credit for the victories of Ulysses S. Grant, but when Halleck himself went into the field, at Corinth, Mississippi, in 1862, he was too slow and cautious to be a good commander. In 1864 he was named chief of staff, a position he held until the end of the war. While his genius was recognized, Halleck was very unpopular.
