Wade Hampton (1818-1902)
In 1861 Wade Hampton raised the Hampton Legion for the Confederacy and was made colonel. He saw action at First Manassas, where he was wounded, and the Peninsula campaign. In 1862 he was promoted to brigadier general. He was wounded again at Seven Pines and at Gettysburg. In 1863 he was made major general and in 1865 was appointed lieutenant general. Hampton was governor of South Carolina (1876-79). In 1878 he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate (1879-91).
