Isaac I. Hayes (1832-1881)
Isaac Israel Hayes was a physician and Arctic explorer. In 1853 he sailed as surgeon in the second Arctic expedition of Elisha Kent Kane. Isaac Hayes undertook his own expedition in 1860. With Kane, Hayes opened the way to the North Pole. When he learned of the Civil War he enlisted as a surgeon in the Union Army and was promoted major and brevet colonel. He undertook his third voyage to the Arctic in 1869. Hayes wrote several books about his experiences.
