John C. Heenan (1835-1873) and Adah Isaacs Menken (1835-1868)

John Carmel Heenan was a well-known American prize fighter whose nickname was the "Benicia Boy." He was married to actress and poet Adah Isaacs Menken whom he abandoned when she was pregnant. In 1860, Heenan fought a famous boxing match with the British champion Tom Sayers which sparked an intense British/American nationalistic athletic rivalry.
