Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864)
Edward Hitchcock was appointed professor of chemistry and natural history at Amherst College in 1825. He became head of a geological survey of Massachusetts and famously identified large birdlike tracks as those of a dinosaur. In 1856 he became state geologist of Vermont. He was a prolific writer, publishing many volumes and tracts on a wide range of subjects.
