John T. Hoffman (1828-1888)

John Thompson Hoffman was mayor of New York and governor of New York State. Early on he joined the Tammany Society and became an asset for the Tweed Ring. In 1865 he was elected mayor of New York. His pleasant personality masked the corruption of Tammany Hall. In 1868 Hoffman was elected governor at the same time that Tweed was elected state senator. Tammany dreamed of controlling New York State. In 1870 Hoffman was reelected as governor but public sentiment was beginning to go against Tammany. Hoffman consequently tried to defy Tammany and repudiated the Tweed Ring, but his political career was ruined.
