Edwin Holmes
Edwin Holmes was the inventor of the first burglar alarm system. He began as a manufacturer of hoop skirts in New England. By the early 1850s he went into the manufacture of electric alarms. He developed a bell that rang if a window or door was opened and sold the system to wealthy homeowners in crime-ridden New York City.
