General John B. Hood (1831-1879)
An 1853 graduate of West Point, Hood resigned the U.S. Army to accept a commission as a 1st lieutenant in the Confederate Army. But in commanding a corps and an army he was a failure. Given the temporary rank of full general, he led the Army of Tennessee with tragic results. He was relieved at his own request.
