Oliver O. Howard (1830-1909)
Oliver Otis Howard was a major general in the Union Army. He was awarded a Medal of Honor for his leadership at the Battle of Seven Pines, where he lost his right arm. After commanding at Antietam and Fredericksburg he earned a promotion to major general. His role at Gettysburg won him a Thanks of Congress citation. Howard's devotion to African Americans led him to establish Howard University in Washington, DC.
