Wilson G. Hunt (1803-1892)

Wilson G. Hunt was Commissioner of Emigration. In 1854 he was defeated by former congressman Fernando Wood in the race for mayor of New York. He was, with Peter Cooper, one of the original trustees of the Cooper Union in 1859 and remained a trustee until his death. Together with Cyrus W. Field, Peter Cooper, and Samuel F. B. Morse, Hunt was one of the directors of the Atlantic cable project. He helped to put a line of cable across Newfoundland.
