David Hunter (1802-1886)

David Hunter was a major general in the Union Army, and was known as "Black Dave." In 1862 he took over the Department of the South and abolished slavery in the department. President Lincoln repudiated this act, announcing that Hunter had exceeded his authority. Hunter then raised the first African-American regiment, the 1st South Carolina. The Confederacy, which despised him, threatened him with death if captured. After Lincoln's assassination Hunter served as president of the group that tried the conspirators.
