Daniel Huntington (1816-1906)

Huntington was one of the most successful, versatile, and well-documented of nineteenth-century American painters. His paintings, characterized by an earnest religiosity and informed by a literary turn of mind, are often undermined by his consciously derivative approach, didactic purpose, and indifferent technical grounding.
