Dolly Madison (1768-1849)

Dolly Payne Madison was the wife of the fourth President, James Madison, and a celebrated hostess. They married in 1794. When James Madison became secretary of state, his wife became "First Lady" for President Jefferson, who was a widower. When Madison was inaugurated in 1809, Dolly Madison became known for her friendliness and elegance.
