John B. Magruder (1810-1870)
John Bankhead Magruder was a Confederate major general known as "Prince John," for his elegant behavior. He won instant fame with his 1861 victory at Big Bethel. Due to his mistakes in the Seven Days' Battles he was reassigned to Texas. At the war's end Magruder refused a parole from the U.S. government and joined the Mexican Army. This clumsily retouched photo shows Magruder before the Civil War, in his Federal uniform.
