Horace Mann (1796-1859)
Horace Mann was an educational reformer. As secretary of the Massachusetts board of education he vastly improved public schools in his native state as well as across the U.S.. In 1848 he was elected as an anti-slavery Whig to Congress, succeeding John Quincy Adams. In 1852 he accepted the presidency of Antioch College.
