Joseph Mansfield (1803-1862)

Joseph King Fenno Mansfield was a major general of volunteers in the Union Army. He was named colonel by Jefferson Davis, who was then secretary of war, in 1853. In the Civil War he commanded the Department of Washington. He was appointed major general in 1862, but in that same year he was wounded while leading a charge at Antietam and died.
