James Jay Mapes (1806-1866)
James Jay Mapes was an educator and agricultural chemist. He was professor of chemistry in the National Academy of Design between 1835 and 1838. In 1847 he bought a worn-out farm in New Jersey which, through his experimental farming, he transformed into productive property. In 1849 Mapes founded a journal entitled "The Working Farmer" and published his results.
