George P. Marsh (1801-1882)

George Perkins Marsh was the U.S. minister to Turkey and to Italy. He was an encyclopedic genius, writing scholarly books in an astonishingly broad range of fields. In 1849 President Taylor appointed him minister to Turkey. He was sent as minister to Italy in 1860 by President Lincoln. He held that post for twenty-one years as he continued to publish books and articles.
