Hans Mattson (1832-1893)
Hans Mattson was born in Sweden and emigrated to the United States in 1851. After two years Mattson bought land in Minnesota. He was a strong opponent of slavery and became a colonel in the 3rd regiment of the Union Army. After the war he was director of the Minnesota state immigration office and then became secretary of state of Minnesota (1870-72). He was U.S. Consul General in Calcutta from 1881 to 1883.
