Washington Irving (1783-1859)
Washington Irving was a short story writer, essayist, poet, biographer, and columnist. He is best known for "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle." He was considered the first American author to achieve international fame. This carte de visite was made when Irving was a young man. This carte de visite is a copy of an 1805 engraved portrait of Irving at age 21 by John Vanderlyn.
