John Jay (1817-1894)
John Jay was a lawyer, author, and diplomat, who was the grandson of John Jay, the first Supreme Court Chief Justice. He retired from the legal practice early and devoted himself to alleviating suffering in society. He was a staunch defender of African-Americans and represented fugitive slaves. He was an enthusiastic leader of the new Republican party in New York state. Jay was minister to Austria (1869-74).
