" This painting depicts George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette standing outside at Washington's Mount Vernon estate in 1784. Martha Washington, servants and children can be seen in the background. Lafayette fought with the American colonists during the Revolutionary War and later became one of the most powerful men in France during the first few years of the French Revolution.
