Prince de Joinville (1818-1900)
Francois Ferdinand Philippe Louis Marie, the Prince de Joinville, was the son of King Louis Philippe d'Orleans of France and a royalist. He was a naval officer and writer on military topics who was prominent in the modernization of the French Navy. He came to America to observe the Civil War, helped advise General McClellan, and enjoyed sketching the sights he saw in the camps. The idea that the North was fighting to free the slaves attracted many Europeans, a few of whom journeyed to the battlefields.
