John Pope (1822-1892)

John Pope, a Union general, performed well during the Mexican War but did less well during the Civil War. In 1861 he was named brigadier general and sent to the Western Department, where he was successful and was promoted to a major general of volunteers. Pope was then called east and given command of the Army of Virginia. But he was slow and lost the trust of his troops when he gave a bombastic address criticizing the eastern forces. At 2nd Bull Run Pope was routed, an embarrassment he blamed on his subordinates. Pope lost command in September 1862. He spent the rest of the war in the Northwest, dealing with native American uprisings. In 1890 Pope was made a full major general.
