Carl Schurz (1829-1906)

Carl Schurz was a German immigrant and an influential American political leader. He participated in the revolutionary uprisings of 1848-49 in Germany and then came to America in 1852. He fought for the Union in the U.S. Civil War and later served as a U.S. senator, a diplomat, and U.S. secretary of the interior.
