Daniel S. Lamont (1851-1905)
Daniel Scott Lamont was secretary of war under President Cleveland. He began with clerkships in the Democratic Party. Lamont went to Washington as private secretary to President Cleveland in 1885. In 1889 the secretary of the Navy gave Lamont a private job in the railways and he began to build a fortune. In 1893 Cleveland recalled Lamont as secretary of war. He was effective but did not shine.
