Joseph Lane (1801-1881)
Joseph Lane was a U.S. delegate and senator from Oregon. He fought in the Mexican War with such bravery that he became a hero and was brevetted major general in 1847. He was appointed by President Polk to be governor of the Territory of Oregon (1849-50). Lane was elected as a delegate to the Oregon Territory Congress (1851-59) and upon admission of Oregon to statehood he was elected as a Democrat to the Senate (1859-61).
