Frederick W. Lander (1821-1862)
Frederick West Lander was a transcontinental explorer, brevet brigadier general of volunteers, and poet. As an engineer he made five transcontinental surveys. In 1860 he married Jean Margaret Davenport, an English actress. When the Civil War began, Lander was sent on a secret mission to Governor Houston of Texas. In May 1861 he was appointed brigadier general. At Edwards Ferry he was badly wounded in the leg. Still injured, he led an outstanding charge at Blooming Gap. In March 1862 he died unexpectedly of pneumonia.
