Sir John Lavery (1846-1941)

Sir John Lavery, a painter, was born in Belfast but trained in Glasgow, London, and Paris. He became a leading member of the Glasgow School and then a successful portraitist in London. He left for Paris in 1881, where he was influenced by Impressionism. He is famous for his "plein air" paintings of women, particularly his American wife, Hazel Martyn (1887-1935).
