Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894)

Sir Austen Henry Layard was one of the leading British archeologists of the 19th century (although he had no formal training in archeology). He was also a diplomat, politician, lawyer, and man of letters. In 1840 he became the excavator of Nineveh, the ancient Mesopotamian site. In 1851 he turned to politics and took a seat in Parliament.
