James H. Ledlie (1832-1882)
James Hewitt Ledlie was a brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. A civil engineer, he was commissioned as a major and promoted to brigadier general in December 1862. Grant wrote in his memoirs that Ledlie, known "...as being otherwise inefficient, proved also to possess disqualification less common among soldiers." He resigned in January 1865. A subordinate said that Ledlie's "removal from command was a heavy loss to the enemy."
