Elias Loomis (1811-1889)

Elias Loomis was a mathematician and astronomer. In 1833 he went to Yale to teach Latin, mathematics, and natural philosophy. With a colleague he rediscovered Haley's Comet and computed its orbit. In 1861 he returned to Yale where he taught until his death. He achieved his greatest influence through his textbooks.
