Mansfield Lovell (1822-1884)
Mansfield Lovell was a major general in the Confederate Army. He graduated West Point in 1842 and was the son of the surgeon general. Lovell was named major general in October 1861, but was unable to prevent the capture of New Orleans, which hung over him like a cloud for the rest of the war. As a result of political pressure he was relieved of his command in December 1862. A court of inquiry in 1863 absolved him of any blame for New Orleans.
