Thaddeus S. C. Lowe (1832-1913) and his Balloon
Thaddeus Sobieski Coulincourt Lowe (who called himself "Professor" Lowe) was an aviation pioneer and a Civil War balloonist. He was Chief Aeronaut of the Army of the Potomac during the war. He made over 3,000 ascents, some from Navy ships. His corps soon amounted to seven balloons. Here he observes the battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia, from his balloon. He provided information that prevented a total surprise of the Union Army at Fair Oaks.
