James Russell Lowell (1819-1891)

James Russell Lowell was an American poet who succeeded Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as professor of modern languages at Harvard University. From 1845 to 1850 he wrote about fifty antislavery articles for periodicals. He was also editor of the Atlantic Monthly from 1857-61. Later in his life he served as a minister to Spain (1877–80) and ambassador to Great Britain (1880–85).
