Caleb Lyon (1822-1875)
Caleb Lyon was a U.S. representative from New York, a lecturer, poet, writer, and governor of Idaho. He was widely known as a great traveler and an expert in foreign customs. He was appointed U.S. consul to Shanghai, China, in 1847. He was the designer of the State seal of California. He returned to New York and was elected as an Independent to one term in the U.S. House of Representatives (1853-55). From 1864 to 1865, Lyon was governor of the Territory of Idaho.
