Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861)
Nathaniel Lyon was a brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. He was a fiery man and a prolific writer in support of Lincoln and the Republican Party. A captain at the St. Louis arsenal in early 1861 he safeguarded Union property and captured the rebel force in Missouri. Lyon was appointed brigadier general of volunteers in May, 1861. During military operations he was killed at Wilson's Creek and became the North's first military hero.
